Mammoth Lakes is a winter wonderland for families of all ages. Mammoth offers so many outdoor activities, it is hard to choose which one to do first! Skiing is definitely at the top of the list for most people, with snowboarding being a close second. While your little ones may not be ready to hit the slopes on Mammoth Mountain, there are still plenty of activities to keep them entertained and happy! From your littlest snow angel to your biggest, you will find a little something for everyone.
Ice Skating – Hit the outdoor rink in Mammoth Lakes for great family fun. You can skate during the day for a 360-degree view of mountains, skate at sunset for a glimpse of the majestic array of color that lights up the California sky or have a romantic skate under the stars at night. The rink also offers skating lessons, group parties, skate rentals and refreshments.
Winter Fishing – Enjoy a day on the river with your fishing pole, tackle box and your kids! Mono County has year-round catch and release fishing in Hot Creek, the Upper Owens River and the East Walker River. You can fish in the sunshine, snow or freezing temperatures since these areas are in lower elevations and they do not freeze like many of the other bodies of water in the area.
Tubing and Sledding – Woolly’s Adventure Summit is the perfect place to take your family for some high-speed tubing and a load of fun. Take the lift to the top of the mountain to reserve your energy and feel your adrenaline spike on the amazing ride back down the hill. You can also take a sled down one of the steep banks or head to the play area to make a snowman, ride the merry-go-round and have some cocoa.
Dog Sled Rides – Take a tour of Mammoth Lakes with the cutest residents in the whole town! The team consists of super friendly Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Huskies. They have been expertly trained to give you a safe and entertaining journey while you ride in comfort, covered in a warm blanket and taking in the majestic scenes around you.
Old Fashioned Snow Play – What is more fun than a good snowball fight? NOTHING! Go back to your own childhood while making memories with your kids by building a replica of Frosty the Snowman, making dozens of snow angels, creating a massive snow maze or building a fort for your snowball war! There is so much fun to be had in Mammoth Lakes without having to leave your home.
When the cold becomes too much for your family, head indoors for continued recreational activities. Mammoth Lakes has an excellent movie theater, bowling alley and trampoline club. You can also hit the athletic club for some indoor pool time! There are also many shops and restaurants where you can warm up and refuel. Whether you love the cold or love to stay toasty warm, you can have the best of both worlds in Mammoth Lakes.
